Milestone: Christmas spirit packed in shoeboxes

Sequim First Baptist Church was in for a surprise in November when their church bus backed up to the door of the Operation Christmas Child Drop-off location in Sequim on Thursday, Nov. 17.

The delivery of almost 400 shoebox gifts destined for needy children around the world was just one of the deliveries collected at Eastern Hills Community Church by local volunteers during Collection Week, Nov. 15-22.

Sequim was a central collection site for the whole Olympic Peninsula. Individual shoebox gifts were put into large shipping cartons that were loaded onto a 28-foot trailer truck to begin the first stage of their journey to the children.

Filled cartons containing more than 3,600 shoebox gifts of love, donated by individuals and churches, arrived from Forks, Port Angeles and Port Townsend to fill the truck trailer. This is the largest donation of shoebox gifts ever from the Olympic Peninsula, event organizers said.
