Milestone: OMC nurse gets ‘Extraordinary Nurse’ honor

Nurse Michael Perchert-Osuna was presented in November with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses — an honor created by the DAISY Foundation to recognize the “extraordinary, compassionate nursing care provided to patients and families every day.”

Chief Nursing Officer Ralph Parker awarded the honor to Perchert-Osuna recently at a presentation at at Olympic Medical Cancer Center.

“Michael is skillful and compassionate when caring for patients and their family members in the intensive care unit,” Parker said.

A recent patient’s family made the decision to discontinue life-saving efforts and allow their brother a comfortable end. A family member said Perchert-Osuna was extremely efficient, conscientious and incredibly sensitive to their brother’s comfort.

“Watching my brother be that ill, and die, was hard, but I don’t believe anyone could have taken better care of him, or us, than Michael,” the family member said.

Olympic Medical nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him as an “Extraordinary Nurse.”

The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”

Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved sculpture called A Healer’s Touch.

Olympic Medical honors up to six nurses a year with a DAISY Award.
