Nominations for the 10th Annual 5th Avenue Theatre Awards recently were announced, with several nominations going to students from Sequim High School for their work in “The Music Man.”

Sequim High captured nominations including Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Non-singing Role for Ben Heintz as Mayor Shinn; Special Honors: Student Achievement for Patrick Carpenter; and Honorable Mentions in Outstanding Orchestra, Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Hair and Make-up, and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Group (The School Board).

The 5th Avenue Awards recognize high school musical theater across the state with a student version of the Tony Awards. Theater students from across Washington will meet en masse at The 5th to celebrate and honor the exceptional musical theater productions presented during the 2011-2012 school year, at 7 p.m. Monday, June 4, at The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle.

At the awards show, the nominated students and schools will perform excerpts from their shows. About 2,100 high school students are expected to attend, along with their families and friends. For a full list of nominees, visit www.5thavenue.org/education/student-programs#5th-avenue-awards.

For the 2011-2012 high school theater season, 191 nominations and 99 honorable mentions were given to the 93 productions in various categories.

Over the past decade, evaluators have traveled to schools across Washington, from large schools in urban districts to those in smaller rural communities, and the mission always has been the same: to honor the work, talent and commitment that students, parents and faculty devote to their school’s yearly musical productions.

Each year, schools from across Washington enter their musicals for consideration by The 5th Avenue Awards Committee.
