Northwest Women’s Chorale hosts Rainshadow Chorale

The NorthWest Women’s Chorale is hosting the Port Townsend RainShadow Chorale at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 N. Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

RainShadow will perform “This Shining Night,” a concert of varied choral music, under the direction of Rebecca Rottsolk. The program includes musical selections featuring the work of American and Canadian composers.

Tickets for the concert are $15 at the door.

The title of the concert comes from a work by Washington native Morten Lauridsen, based on the text of James Agee’s poem, “Sure on This Shining Night.” The centerpiece of the concert is the “Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare” composed by jazz artist George Shearing. Also included are works by American composer Aaron Copland, and Srul Irving Glick, one of Canada’s most prominent composers.

RainShadow is an auditioned group of men and women choral musicians formed in 1997. See go to www.rainshadowchorale.org. The NorthWest Women’s Chorale also will perform three numbers, “Wings of Song,” by Mendelssohn, a traditional spiritual, “A City Called Heaven” arranged by Paul Carey, and “Famine Song.” The combined choruses sing Richard Nance’s “Set Me as a Seal,” featuring NWWC pianist Kristin Quigley-Brye playing French horn.
