Joan Hobbs Burge
March 14, 1941 – May 25, 2017
At age 76, Joan has lost her long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Joan was born in El Centro, CA to James Paul Hobbs and Beulah Montgomery Hobbs, of Niland, CA. She attended public schools in Niland through the eight grade and high school in Calipatria, CA, where she was the class of 1958 Valedictorian. She attended San Diego State College (now San Diego State university) from 1958 – 1961, graduating in three years with a degree in education. She taught elementary school in San Diego from 1961 to 1966.
Joan married Albert Burge of San Diego on April 11, 1965. Joan and Albert moved to Ventura, CA in 1966. Their children, Karen Lynn and Peggy Ann, were born in Ventura. Joan volunteered and worked as a substitute teacher in the Ventura Public Schools for the next 20 years.
It was in Ventura that Joan embarked on her passion as a family historian and took her daughters on summer vacations to most of the 50 states in search of the records of her ancestors. She was a member of various Genealogy Societies. She was a member of the DAR from 1973 until 1996. When she could no longer follow what was happening at meetings and conferences, she dropped her membership in these societies.
In 1986, Joan and Albert moved to Fairfax, VA. Joan enjoyed visiting the National Archives and the shorter travel distances to visit genealogy libraries. Joan was a substitute teacher in the Fairfax school system from 1986 to 1992.
Joan loved to travel. She traveled to all 50 states and most of Canada’s Provinces. Joan and Albert retired to Sequim, WA, in 1995. One more trip was on Joan’s schedule: her lifelong dream to visit Fiji, New Zealand and Australia and have a beer in Alice Springs.
Joan was known for her generosity and willingness to help others. She quickly learned new skills. She loved crossword puzzles and was a voracious reader. She love to sew, smock, and crochet making dresses, puppets, and doll clothes for her daughters. Joan made friends wherever she went. Many still send letters.
Joan is survived by her husband, Albert of Sequim, daughter Karen of Port Hadlock, and granddaughter Angela Carrillo-Burge, daughter Peggy and granddaughter Cassandra Burge of Tacoma; niece Rebecca Jones of Van Cleave, MS, nephew Rex Banks of Jackson, MS; uncle Tom Montgomery of Trinidad, CA; cousins Jane Spini, Tom Montgomery, and William Shafer, Ed Hobbs and Floyd Hobbs.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, and her sister Pauline Banks of Hot Springs Village, AR
The family was supported through these years by the caregivers from Wright’s Home Care and the wonderful staff at Dungeness Courte. Neighbors stepped up numerous times. A special mention to Kathy Burrer for facilitating discussion groups for families whose loved ones suffered from dementia. And thanks to Assured Hospice for providing end of life support.
A Celebration of life will take place at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington Street in Sequim, on Saturday July 1, at 12:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the AlzheimerÕs Association, Washington State Chapter, 100 West Harrison Street, North Tower, Suite N200, Seattle, WA 98119-4116.
