PC jazz ensemble sets summer quarter concert

The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble invites the public to its summer quarter concert set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the college’s Maier Hall, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The event is free and open to the public, and gives the community a chance to enjoy “America’s classical music,” according to ensemble conductor Dr. David Jones.

The group features Robbin Eaves on vocals with a 14-piece jazz band. Eaves will sing standards from the repertoire of Frank Sinatra (“Summer Wind”), Ella Fitzgerald (“Goody, Goody”) and Etta Jones (“Don’t Go to Strangers”).

Also appearing as a featured vocalist at the concert is Olga Palenga, a relatively new member of the band who is usually heard on piano and clarinet; Palenga will sing “Autumn Leaves” and “Moonlight Serenade.”

The band will be performing music by Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Freddie Redd, Al Jolson and Spyro Gyra.

A brand new composition by Jones also will premier. Stylistically, the music covers pop tunes from the 1920s-1960s, a Russian folk song (“Song of the Volga Boatmen”), early swing, bebop, hard bop, Afro-Cuban and jazz-rock fusion.

Performers in the band come from all over the Olympic Peninsula, including Sequim’s Hannah Patterson on trombone.
