Peninsula College sets star lineup for online vocal class

Peninsula College vocal music instructor Elaine Gardner-Morales looks to bring world-class clinicians into online classes to work directly with students this winter quarter.

The lineup includes Michele Weir, Angela Kelman, Jenna Monroe and Joani Taylor.

In addition to studying with each of these professionals, students will experience the process of developing a professionally-mixed recording of their own.

Students wishing to enroll in this class, either through community education or for credit, must register by Monday, Jan. 4. Visit bit.ly/32I3BdN or pencol.edu/music for more information.

College representatives say remote learning has been challenging in particular for PC’s vocal ensemble, with students who typically sing together in a group are now rehearsing online.

“We had to think out of the box in order to provide a meaningful experience that really benefited students and gave them something exceptional in this difficult time,” Gardner-Morales said.

Weir has made significant contributions to the development of vocal jazz around the globe. She served as vocal producer for the Manhattan Transfer’s 2009 CD, “The Chick Corea Songbook,” and was a member of the Grammy-nominated PM Singers.

Kelman is a vocal coach and author of “The Five Point Singing System.” A former lead singer for the award-winning group Farmer’s Daughter, the Vancouver, BC., native is also a solo recording artist and gigs with he Polyester Philharmonic.

Monroe is a singer, pianist and voice coach from the United Kingdom. She is versed in classical and contemporary vocal techniques, and with more than 30-years’ experience, has sung and recorded across England.

Taylor is Canada’s “First Lady of the Jazz Ballad,” and enjoys legendary status in the U.S. and Canada, having sung on thousands of film scores, commercials and recordings.

The program is receiving support from the Peninsula College Foundation, with sponsorship from The Olympus Group at D.A. Davidson and Sound Community Bank.

“We have been proud supporters of the vocal ensemble and Jingle Jazz,” said Getta Workman, Executive Director for the PC Foundation. “When we learned of this new series, it was obvious that we would continue our support.”
