Sequim band to host free ‘Shades of Autumn’ concert on Saturday

The Sequim City Band will paint musical pictures of changing leaves and other pieces that provide “chills and thrills” appropriate for Halloween at their first concert of the 2022-23 indoor series, titled “Shades of Autumn.”

The band will take the stage at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

The October concert will feature songs focusing on autumn by some renowned contemporary composers, with with Susan Sorensen, KSQM 91.5 FM’s own “Sassy Susan,” presenting the program notes. The concert and on-site parking are free.

The concert features “beautiful melodies and warm harmonies with solos for oboe and baritone emulate the crisp autumn air and subtle changes in light in October” by Eric Whitacre, concert organizers note.

The presentation offers a composition by Frank Ticheli, who had images on his mind of Halloween with its costumes and jack-o’-lanterns and his mischievous young song when he composed “Abracadabra.”

Among other pieces, the band will also offer work by John Williams, who has written some well-known theme music for the iconic films such as “Star Wars,” the Harry Potter series, “Jaws” and “The Witches of Eastwick.”

Masks are advised for audience members and will be for all future indoor concerts until the Clallam County Covid rates are in the “low” category, as prescribed by Clallam County health officials.

The remaining concerts for the indoor season will be at the SHS auditorium, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, and 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12.
