Sequim City Band concert spotlights ‘Stage and Screen’

The Sequim City Band invites the community to a night of “Stage and Screen” music starting at 7 p.m. Saturday Aug. 4, at the James Center For the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, picnic blanket and food for this free concert.

Tyler Benedict will direct the band in a musical tribute to memorable movies, Broadway blockbusters and television tunes.

Young and old alike will recognize songs from the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz”; Harold Arlen’s and E.Y. Harburg’s numbers include “Over the Rainbow,” “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” “The Merry Old Land of OZ” and “If I Only Had a Brain.”

Composer Meredith Wilson played in John Philip Sousa’s band and he wrote “76 Trombones” in the the hit musical play, “The Music Man” (1957).

The concert includes the musical score from the 1962 epic, “Lawrence of Arabia,” as well as a medley from “Mary Poppins” (including “Feed the Birds,” “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Chim Chim Cheree,” “Step in Time” and “Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious!”).

A selection from “The Great Race” features the talents of the band’s clarinet section, and television and movie fans may recognize the performance of “Star Trek Through the Years.”

Academy Award-winning composer John Williams’ works are featured in scores from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “A.I./Artificial Intelligence” and “The Patriot,” while the younger audience members will hear music from the 2004 animated movie “The Incredibles,” and Walt Disney’s 2016 computer animation film, “Moana.”

The guest announcer for this concert is Dr. Thomas Reis, an optometrist practicing in Port Angeles who is also an experienced musician, having appeared throughout Western Washington and Victoria, B.C. as a featured tenor soloist.

The band’s next performance is Tuesday, Aug. 14, as part of the City of Sequim’s Concert in the Park series.
