The Sequim City Band will accent the narration of Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” with several short musical interludes at its “Sounds of the Season” concert, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.
Narrator/announcer Bud Davies from KSQM 91.5FM will emcee the concert that includes standard pieces of holiday music presented in classic and unusual ways.
Songs offered include the melody “Greensleeves,” a piece traced back to 1360 that saw three verses of lyrics and a title (“What Child Is This?”) added in 1868.
Also on tap is “The Eighth Candle” by Stephen Reisteter, which honors the story of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, and David Lovrien’s arranged selection of Christmas standards gives the listener a glimpse into the darker side of Christmas by transposing some of the traditionally light tunes (“Away in a Manger,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?”) into minor keys.
The concert will be capped with two modern Irving Berlin favorites — “Happy Holiday/White Christmas” — combined by arranger Ted Ricketts.
The concert will also feature an audience Christmas sing-a-long of a few well-known carols (lyrics provided).
The concert will be presented without an intermission. Well-fitting masks are advised for audience members and will be for all future indoor concerts until the Clallam County COVID rates are in the “low”category as described by the county, band members note.
The final remaining concert of the Sequim’ City Band’s indoor season is at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12, also at the SHS auditorium. The concert will feature female composers.
