Sequim Education Foundation funds $22K in teacher grants

From books and tablets to exercise chairs and fields trips, the most recent round of Sequim Education Foundation teaching grants have distributed more than $22,000 worth of resources to 17 local educators.

The foundation recently announced the grants that were made possible by donors and community partner organizations: Soroptimist International of Sequim, Sequim Sunrise Rotary and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Recipients include:

• Jennifer Lopez: “Breakfast &Books,” reading and family engagement

• Kim Knudson and Gretta Rich: “Tablets and Robots” and “Read Naturally,” 32 second-grade subscriptions

• Lindsay Rapelje, Sheri Kruckeberg, Dena Riccobene and Elizabeth Lawson: Family Reading Night and book gift

• Robin Forrest: Highly Capable Program/Gift Teacher resources

• Caleb Gentry: Lego Mindstorm expansion sets

• Sonja Bittner and Ardis Mangano: Visual acuity screening tool

• Sheri Burke, Shannon Green, Aaron Reno and Jennifer Lopez: Point Defiance Zoo field trip

• Sonja Younger: Rosetta Stone subscriptions for English Language Learners

• Casey Lewis: Active Learners exercise ball chairs

In the past 16 years, the Sequim Education Foundation has funded more than 140 teaching grants totaling more than $125,000, with $45,000-plus awarded in the past two years.

”We are pleased to be able to say that we were able to fund all grant applications received this past year,” foundation representatives said in a press release.

The Sequim Education Foundation funds projects that promote “vibrant learning environments where students actively participate in creative problem solving and engaged learning, supported by the tools and teaching expertise that make learning meaningful and inspiring.”
