The area’s youngest musicians get an opportunity to shine in the upcoming 29th annual Young Artist and ninth annual Junior Young Artist Competitions.

Twenty-six competitors, including five from Sequim, vie for cash awards.

The competition, which is free and open to the public, begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles.

The Young Artist Competition is open to any instrumental music student under 22 who did not win first place in 2014 to compete for a $500 first place award. Its Sequim competitors are Trent Lacour on piano, Shannon Gordon on piano and Kate Powers on violin.

The Junior Young Artist Competition opens to local students in ninth grade or below who have not competed or applied for the Symphony’s Young Artist Competition or won first place last year.

They too compete for cash prizes with first place $250.

Sequim competitors are Erin Dwyer on piano and Keith Wilwert on piano.

Cash awards are donated by the Port Angeles Garden Club and two anonymous donors.
