The Sequim Open Aire Market will be completing its 15th year in just a few weeks. We hope you will come down this week and on Oct. 23 to help us celebrate. We will be hosting a "Christmas in October" fiesta that day that will inspire your giving spirit. Think local for the holidays.

What is new at the market? The apples are getting better and better – don’t miss the harvest from Dungeness Orchards. They grow a wide variety of stone fruit and will be happy to teach you a thing or two

about varieties and their uses.

All the farms at the market are wonderful resources for learning about cooking, storing and the basics of what’s what regarding local produce. They just might get you to try a leek, celeriac or rutabaga; watch out, these actually are really tasty!

If you haven’t seen DJ’s Pens, start thinking about gifts when you stop in to visit his booth this week. This is actually a husband and wife business; Dennis Johnson makes beautiful hand-crafted writing pens while his wife, Nancy Johnson of Nancy’s, makes playful name plaques for children or adults. These are just a few of the creative wood products at the market.

Other wood-crafters include Studio 19. Peg and Chris Christensen make gorgeous pieces from all sorts of wood: boxes, cutting boards, rolling pins and more. New this year, they have been making gates, you can’t miss the giant whale tail outside their tent. This would be a really fun gate to pass through to enter the garden or yard. They also do custom gates and other such things. Say hello to Peg and Chris on Saturday.

The music will be Kentucky Bullfrog – a great favorite that we have waited for all season.
