Sequim View Cemetery picked for Wreaths Across America site

A living display of honor for the legacy of veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice, Wreaths Across America is coming to the North Olympic Peninsula for the first time.

A national nonprofit movement bringing together volunteers and communities to not only remember the nation’s fallen but to teach the next generation about those sacrifices, Wreaths Across America (WAA) is coming to Sequim View Cemetery in mid-December.

The WAA mission, the organization’s website (www.wreathsacross america.org) notes, is to “Remember, Honor, and Teach” and is carried out through wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 1,600 locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad.

Michael Trebert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sequim View Cemetery are raising funds to place wreaths on the headstones of the 563 veterans laid to rest there.

Those interested in sponsoring a wreath or volunteering at the event set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, can visit www.wreaths acrossamerica.org/WA0153 to learn more.

More than 100 volunteers are needed on the day of the event, as well as before and after, organizers said.

Wreaths Across America has over the last 28 years grown into a national movement. More than one million volunteers participate each year. It founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.
