GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Get ready to run! The school’s annual Jog-A-Thon is set for 1-2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Halloween at Greywolf, however, will be a “business as usual” school day. The school will not have costumes nor classroom parties. Costumes, masks, face paint, fake wounds/blood and weapons will not be allowed. Students who wear costumes to school will be asked to remove them and put them in their backpacks. Staff is encouraging all students to wear black, orange, yellow and white to school on Halloween.

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Students in Eric Danielson’s fifth-grade classroom have been working on writing to explain. Students wrote about a family tradition that they have at home.

Birthday Time!

Birthdays are very fun in my family. Every time one of our birthdays are about two months away, we look on Amazon for what we want for presents. I enjoy doing this, as we get exactly what we want. Finally, after what feels like a millennium, the birthday fun arrives.

After we go to bed, my mom hangs streamers of every color in the spectrum on the Birthday Girl’s door (I have one little sister, Leah). When you wake up, you can walk through the streamers and see all your bagged and wrapped presents on the kitchen table. Though, we must wait until Mom and Dad wake up. That takes two hours.

When the parents are finally up, here come the excuses. “Let me get the camera,” Dad would say, even though he was holding his phone. “Let me get my chai,” Mom usually said, walking in Slo-Mo to the Keurig machine.

After all my mom and dad’s needs where taken care of, we would open the presents. You can only open half of your presents in the morning, and the last half after school (for me at least, Leah’s birthday is in the summer). Leah and I get two parties each; a friend party, and a family party. Only my grandma and grandpa come to the family party. My family is huge, but only they live in Sequim.

After all the parties and presents, it is time to wait for another year, again.

My Christmas Tradition

Every December since I was three years old my family has done the elf on the shelf tradition with me. Later, when my sister was old enough, we did it with her.

The Elf on the shelf is an elf sent from the North Pole to see if you’ve been good or not. He goes and reports to Santa at the end of the day while you’re sleeping. Then he comes back each day and hides in a different spot.

Once I was three, I woke up and ran downstairs. When I got down there I saw a banana peel on our Christmas tree. I looked around Right next to the banana was an elf. I decided to name him “Snowball.” But an hour later I renamed him “Alvin” named after Alvin from “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

So, on Dec. 1 every year Alvin comes. My favorite thing Alvin has done is the Spiderman prank. I woke up and walked into my kitchen and saw him hanging upside down from a string tied to the ceiling. He had a tiny Spiderman mask that he cut out from paper and colored onto it. Years ago, when I was younger, knowing that Alvin was watching me I wouldn’t throw any fits. Now that I’m older I don’t really care. But when Alvin comes my sister is an angel.

I really hope that Alvin comes and surprises me and my sister.

Summer Movies

During the last day of school, our teacher sometimes puts on a movie and a party. Even if they don’t, after school, we get out a few blankets and sheets and put them outside on some chairs, making a fort, using a sheet to block out a tiny pinch of sun.

We get out a tablet, iPad, or phone. We put on a movie, after arguing about it for ages. It happens because one person has seen this movie, or we get tied on which movie we should watch because people think one movie will harm their record. I always get outvoted and end up watching obnoxious boring movies. It’s usually a movie my parents and older siblings pick, but to me, all of them seem the same. They still argue that they’re 100% different. I still doubt their reasons.

The next thing that happens is my little brother complains that a movie is not a movie without popcorn or candy. Luckily, my parents have been getting used to this and they come prepared.

Next, the royal teenage princess complains that it’s not comfy enough for her. We all have to give her our pillows and make them into her mattress. Please tell me that she’ll realize that she’s not the queen of the world.

Finally, my older brother gets in trouble for going inside and staying there and playing his iPod, which is doing something that’s entertaining to him. To me, that’s not fair because he’s the only one who is allowed inside, but it’s still not fair he gets in trouble for having fun on a different device.
