GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Sequim Sunrise Rotary recently donated six United States flags, poles and mounting brackets for Greywolf Elementary classrooms. Echo Cox’s kindergarten class jumped for joy at the news. They are looking forward to the new addition to their classroom and saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Greywolf sends a big “howl” out and thank you for their generosity.
HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Helen Haller Elementary Specialist teachers — Sheri Kruckeberg (library), Laura Lorentzen (music), Holly Thornton (physical education), Dave Hasenpflug (science) and Nessa Goldman (STEM/science, technology, engineering and mathematics) — have implemented a new and exciting “Positive Behavior Intervention System” for students in all grade levels in specialist classes. It is called the “Specialist Class of the Week” awards.
To inspire more student engagement and commitment to excellence, classes work together as teams to earn high-performing scores when they attend their daily specialist classes. At the end of the week, classes in each grade level that received the highest score for the week receive the “Specialist Class of the Week” award certificate and a trophy to keep in their classrooms for the following week.
“High-performing” classes are also celebrated weekly with a “High-Performing” certificate. The program is motivating students to give their best effort to learn.
Interruptions to class instruction and student learning have decreased dramatically! As the students experience success together, they are excited and working hard to help each other. The power of high expectations for student behavior and learning is having a tremendously positive impact on the students of Helen Haller Elementary. Congratulations to all our hard-working students!
SEQUIM OPTIONS SCHOOL
“We all have superpowers,” was just part of the message that Sequim City Manager Charlie Bush gave to Michelle Mahitka’s Sequim Options School students on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Mahitka and Rev. Julia McKenna-Blessing invited Mr. Bush to be a guest speaker for Mahitka’s Real World class.
“We are working on a career unit and invited Charlie to share his profession, how he got there and any real world experiences he thought might inspire my students,” Mahitka said.
“Charlie Bush sat down with my students and spoke with them, not at them or above them. He gave a great presentation on how he ended up here at Sequim but one of the things that inspired the kids the most was this line: ‘You all have superpowers. You just need to find them.’”
