When asked to write about something they did over the summer, students in Bettina Hoesel’s class had these responses:

Caitlin Gerdes : I got to pet a husky. It is 4-weeks-old. It is a baby dog. They are so cute.

Samantha Wickert: I saw a horse at the farm.

Grace Dormer: I went to Montana. I rode a horse. I rode it bareback and I rode it with a saddle.

Dylan Cynor: Once when my mom got out of the tent she saw me on the other side.

Reading specialist Betsy Smith is offering two fall training sessions. Second training sessions are from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 in the school library. Please commit to attending both sessions. For more information, call Smith at 360-582-3248 or bsmith@sequim.k12.wa.us. SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

We’ve all seen the destruction, the flooding, the water rescues … Those effected by Hurricane Harvey clearly need our help. With record breaking rainfall homes, schools and business were inundated with toxic flood waters. In our seventh-grade science class at Sequim Middle School, students came in the first day wondering how they might assist those in need.

Since Texas is too far way for us to go and volunteer, it was decided to take up a collection of money for a Help Houston! Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Over the course of just eight days, coins and bills poured into a 1-liter graduated cylinder.

All totaled, seventh-graders raised $200 to send to the American Red Cross, the humanitarian relief agency.

Spontaneous generosity, benevolence and care for fellow humans in crisis are indeed alive and well among the youth of Sequim!

— teacher Joe Landoni
