Around the Club
July has ended and we are more than halfway through summer and couldn’t be having more fun. Infused into daily club life was “Shark Week,” made famous by the Discovery Channel and a favorite time of year for program director Tessa Jackson. Waves and dorsal fins decorated the club and lessons and craft projects were centered on the scary fish.
In addition to the shark activities and our regular weekly programs, the kids participated in Pickle Ball camp led by Sequim Picklers and club volunteers.
Our SMART Girl and Boys 2 Men participants made their way to Deer Park Cinema to watch “The Emoji Movie.”
Teen Club
The teens took a lesson in cake decorating, inspiring a few members to take up baking and creating at home. Kids loaded up on the bus Tuesday night for Laurel Lanes and the site of some competitive bowling that has evolved from the two groups of kids and staff that face off every other week.
With all this sunshine, they couldn’t resist a trip west to their favorite swim spot out at Lake Crescent.
Our teens have been busy participating in programs volunteering their time and earning points to qualify them for these fun outings. They sure earned it after all the time they put in fundraising over Sequim Lavender Weekend.
Brain Gain
It was sensory overload last week in Brain Gain. The members learned all about their senses, about how they engage the world around them. The kids were surprised to learn how they are using various senses throughout the day and without realizing it.
Members created poster boards of their senses and how they are used to hang around the Club. They worked on their sense of taste by sampling various things like salt water and sugar water to engage their sense of taste.
Our group discussed Helen Keller and her limited senses, they learned how to create messages in Braille using the Braille alphabet.
Morning Camp
Our lucky group of campers got off the peninsula this week with a trip over to Seattle to watch the Seattle Mariners take on the Boston Red Sox. The M’s didn’t pick up a win, but the trip was a total success. Our members were invited on the field to walk around.
Nothing beats getting down where the players are to see what it’s like first hand. The kids loved showing up on the jumbo screen, having the club listed as a visiting group and watching Russell Wilson throw out the first pitch.
Before the week was over, campers shot down US Highway 101 to Potlatch to tour the Cushman Dam and its powerhouse. The campers learned about the hydroelectric plant and were given a behind the doors tour of areas not typically accessed by the public.
Junior Rangers
Each summer we bring both clubhouses together in a joint adventure and this was the week. Youths from the Port Angeles Club and the Carroll C. Kendall Club rode together on our bus out to NatureBridge at Lake Crescent.
Before partaking in a celebratory barbecue, the groups split in two. The first group was given life jackets, a paddle and sent out on the crystal clear lake. The others laced up their shoes and hit the trail making their way to Marymere Falls on the short hike. Not many of our kids get the opportunity to be out on the water let alone in a Salish canoe. The smiles were constant as they worked together to paddle the canoe across the lake.
