A group of local talent is performing in honor of New York City this weekend to help make some Big Apple dreams come true for Sequim singers.

Readers Theatre Plus’ latest show “A Concert of New York Songs” benefits Sequim High School choir’s upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The free show begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave. Donations are accepted and fully given to the trip.

Local performers Vicki Helwick and Elise Ray, a Sequim graduate, take on a wide variety of tunes from movies and Broadway such as “New York, New York,” “Broadway Rhythm,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “American Tune,” “Chelsea Morning” and many more.

They are accompanied on piano by John Lorentzen, Sequim High’s choir director, and bassist Michael Helwick. The Sequim High School Select choir also will perform.

As tradition, the choir travels every four years to New York City to perform in Carnegie Hall. This year’s concert will take place on Sunday, March 30.

The Sequim High School Choir Boosters are coordinating the trip for more than 40 students including fundraising, air travel and student activities.
