Speaker to explain how there is ‘More to Movement Than Exercise’

Katy Bowman, a biochemist and author, will present “There is More to Movement Than Exercise,” a WOW! Working on Wellness radio forum set for 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, on KSQM 91.5 FM.

“We can grasp sedentary behavior as it relates to exercise because it’s easy to see the difference between exercising one hour and not exercising one hour a day,,” Bowman said. “But few of us contemplate the difference between exercising one hour a day and not exercising the other twenty-three.”

The other problem, as Bowman writes in her book, “Move Your DNA,” is that “our current model sets both food and movement as a negative. Eating food (a biological imperative) makes us feel guilty, and we turn movement (also a biological imperative) into punishment. Atonement. Clearly, this model is not working for us.”

A best-selling author, speaker and leader in the “Movement” movement, Bowman has been seeking to change the way we move and think about the need for movement. She teaches movement globally and speaks about sedentarism and movement ecology to academic and scientific audiences, and her nine books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Her education company, Nutritious Movement, is based in Washington state, where she lives with her family.

WOW! Working on Wellness is a health education program of Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic — Sequim’s free clinic, which provides basic urgent care and chronic health care services to uninsured community members.
