Some Sequim High seniors find the best send-off in their final year of high school might be on the stage.

They are bringing New York to town for “A Night of Broadway!” from Jan. 31-Feb. 8 for the annual senior play. Fifteen seniors are joined by 40 underclassmen performing 17 numbers from 16 shows to benefit the seniors’ graduation party.

They’ll perform Broadway hits from “Westside Story” to “Hairspray” to “Wicked.”

Director Robin Hall said they purposely selected a variety of songs from older musicals like “Fiddler on the Roof” to more current hits like “Rent.”

“We’d probably never get to do a show like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” but “Time Warp” is a great number that we had to do,” she said.

Some performers are joining the cast for the first time like Carlo Juntilla.

“Through high school, I’ve been involved in a lot of things like ASB and sports but never a play,” Juntilla said.

“With being in a senior class play, I thought now is the time. It’s enjoyable being around people who I admire. I just regret not doing any other plays before now.”

Fellow senior Ciara Westhoven has been in several Sequim High plays like “Footloose” and “The Music Man.”

“It’s crazy thinking it’s going to be my last year,” she said.

“It’s fun to see all the people coming up in the theater. It’s definitely going to be memorable.”

Westhoven performs throughout the play including singing a key part in “Brotherhood of Man” from “How to succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “In His Eyes” from “Jekyll & Hyde.”

She’s planning to finish her acting career for the school in the spring operetta “The Sound of Music.”  

Along with Westhoven and Juntilla, Hall said there are plenty of great voices in the production.

“Eric Hermosada sings “Maria” from “Westside Story” and I’ve got to admit I started to cry,” Hall said.

“McKayla Neale sings in “All I Ask of You” from “Phantom of the Opera” and that alone is worth the price of admission.”

Some of the other songs in the show come from “A Chorus Line,” “High School Musical,””Annie Get Your Gun,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Grease” and “Wicked.”

Over the years, the senior play was exclusively seniors but as the productions grew so did the cast numbers so they began incorporating underclassmen.

Hall said they’ve raised as much as $4,000 for the senior party and earned about $1,500 last year through the plays.

They do their best to keep production costs low to give more back to the senior class, Hall said.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31; Saturday, Feb. 1; Thursday, Feb. 6; and Saturday, Feb. 8,  in the high school auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave., with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday, Feb. 8.

Tickets are available at the door for $8 for adults and $6 for seniors, children and students with an ASB card.
