Summer Nature Mart to feature hand-crafted items, cookies

Much like hosting a holiday bazaar in July, the Dungeness River Nature Center offers up the Summer Nature Mart from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10, in the Rainshadow Hall at the newly-renovated Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road.

Much like the center’s annual Holiday Nature Mart held each year in November, the Summer Nature Mart features hundreds of one-of-a-kind gifts handcrafted by artisans, fresh-baked cookies, nesting boxes, photo ops and more.

Items created by the Dungeness River Nature Center volunteers include silk scarves, knits, needle-felted whimsy, bird houses, summer wreaths, nesting boxes, needlepoint, lavender gifts, dried herbs and handcrafted ornaments, and a cookie bar.

Gift items will be included for those wanting to get a head start on holiday shopping. A raffle will be held for a large handmade quilt as well.

The center’s gift shop — featuring clothing, natural history, camping and trail guidebooks, children’s storybooks, activity books, science kits and toys — will also be open both days.

Proceeds support educational programs at the center.

Cookie bakers needed

Instead of the traditional bake sale featured at the Dungeness River Nature Center’s annual Holiday Nature Mart, planners of the Summer Nature Mart will offer a “Cookie Bake Sale” and are looking for bakers — be it from grandmother’s favorite, old fashioned recipes, international delicacies or chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, gluten-free, nut-free or other.

Those who would like to bake some cookies to help raise money for river center educational programs are encouraged to contact Stacey Fradkin, 505-670-3153 or fstacey3@msn.com for more information.

Cookies, along with a list of ingredients, need to be dropped off at the center after 9:30 a.m. Friday and/or Saturday, July 8-9.
