‘The Guys’ returns for one-night tribute

A year after first performing "The Guys" in Port Angeles for a string of shows, Readers Theatre returns to Sequim for a one-night tribute to the first responders of the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy in New York City.

“’The Guys’ is the ideal telling of the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy,” said Carol Swarbrick Dries, who plays a Columbia University professor in the performance.

“The play isn’t political,” she said. “It’s talking about the guys and survivors and how we as Americans wanted to help.”

Her character is helping a New York Fire Department captain (played by Paul Martin) prepare eulogies for some of his firefighters lost in the World Trade Center attacks.

“It’s not sad but redemptive,” Martin said. “By the end it’s a complete reversal. He realizes he can do it.”

Swarbrick Dries said her character through discussion recognizes her own feelings about the tragedy, too.

The show is free and begins at 7:30 p.m. with attendees encouraged to arrive early. Donations support local American Legion Riders Post 29, which includes motorcycle riders from across Clallam County.
