Trinity United Methodist Church (UMC) invites the community to a special Blessing of the Animals service, to be held outdoors in front of the church at 100 N. Blake Ave. at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.
The service honors the tradition started by St. Francis of Assisi more than 800 years ago.
The annual event celebrates the life of Francis, whose feast day is observed on Oct. 4. Francis believed that all of God’s creations — including animals and human beings — are interconnected and equally blessed. The tradition of blessing animals recognizes pets not as possessions, but as fellow creatures that reflect God’s creativity and goodness.
“When we gather for this blessing, we are reminded that God’s covenant of love extends to the whole creation,” Pastor Desi Larson stated in a press release. “This act of blessing becomes a sign of peace and reconciliation. It is a way of proclaiming that God delights in life — all life.”
All members of the community are welcome to bring their pets — dogs, cats, birds and others — to receive an individual blessing. For the safety of all participants, pets must be kept on a leash or in a carrier.
For those who have lost a pet, the church offers a time of remembrance. Attendees are invited to bring a picture of a deceased pet or simply name them aloud so the community can offer a prayer of remembrance.
The service will take place rain or shine.
