Twenty Sequim students chosen for state choir honors

Select students from Sequim High School’s choirs were chosen to participate in Washington Music Educators Association’s All-State Ensembles, and the National Association for Music Education NAfME All-Northwest Ensembles.

“Only the top students throughout the state of Washington are accepted into these groups,” SHS choir director Florin Baros said.

Sixteen students were chosen for the WMEA Symphony: Makayla Allen, Sergio Arreguin, Olivia Baros, Christina Caples, Justin Dalton, Kendall Day, Jackson Imholt, Julia Jack, Aason Judd, Espn Judd, Keaton King, Kaia Lestage, Hayden Rayburn, Hi’ilei Robinson, Becca Van Dyken and Angel Wagner.

Three students — Danika Chen, Lili Mitchell and Kaila Spaulding — were chosen for the All-Northwest Mixed Choir, while Jovi Weller was chosen for the All-Northwest Treble Choir, groups that feature students from multiple states.

In September, students submitted recorded auditions to the WMEA and were then selected based on their mastery of music skills, quality and range of their voices, according to representatives with the SHS Choir Boosters.

All-State Choir members are singers in good standing in a Regional Honors Choir and in a State Honors Choir, Florin Baros said.

The rigorous audition process included two major scales, chromatic scale, a prepared piece, four-part harmony and sight singing, she added.

“I am proud of the hard work and dedication of my students,” Florin Baros said.

Students were set to perform in the All State Band, Symphony Choir, Symphony Orchestra at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 at Meydenbauer Center Hall in Bellevue.
