Veterans Corner: Ceremony set at Pioneer Memorial Park

x

There will be no ceremony at the U.S. Coast Guard base on Veterans Day. Because of restrictions from the pandemic and the large crowd that usually attends, it has been cancelled.

In response to the Sequim Prairie Garden Club asking questions, Jack Grennan Post 62 of the American Legion and Michael Trebert Chapter-NSDAR are hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St. It will also be streamed on the Veterans Center Facebook page at facebook.com/nwvrc.

This will be a simple ceremony to honor veterans with masks and social distancing enforced.

If you have questions, please contact the Post Commander at grennanalpost62@gmail.com. Thank you to garden club members for the use of the park.

Wreaths Across America

Michael Trebert Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring a Wreaths Across America event at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Sequim View Cemetery, 1505 Sequim-Dungeness Way. This is a national program that began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992 and has now expanded to all states.

The program’s mission is to “Remember, Honor, Teach.”

The chapter is raising money to place more than 550 wreaths on the graves of veterans buried at the cemetery. The live, 21-inch balsam wreaths cost $15. You can purchase a wreath online at www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/WA0153; the “WA0153” designates the Sequim cemetery. You can also write a check payable to MTC – DAR and send to: PO Box 1917 Port Angeles WA 98362.

This ceremony will also be streamed at facebook.com/nwvrc.

If you have questions, please contact Judy Tordini at jktrn@wildblue.net.

Monument tiles available

In front of the Sequim Museum & Arts building at 544 N. Sequim Ave. is a veterans monument with flags and tiles honoring veterans. These tiles can be purchased using a form found on the museum website.

VFW Post 6787 in Carlsborg is responsible for the monument in partnership with the museum. Please stop by and take a look.

If you have questions about the tiles or the monument or need a paper copy of the form, please contact the VFW Post Commander at sealteam54@q.com. This would be a nice Christmas gift for the veteran in your family!

Youth essay contest

The Veterans of Foreign Wars has an annual youth essay contest to encourage our nation’s youth in Americanism. Winners receive an award from the local post and then move on to district, state and national if they advance.

This year’s topic is, “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” There are three age groups to compete in: grades 3-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Essays are due to the posts by Oct 31.

If anyone has a student that would like to enter, please contact Sequim Post 1470 at secretary@vfwpost4760.com to get the materials.

The Carlsborg Post 6787 is also taking essays. Please contact Post Commander Rod Lee at sealteam54@q.com or 623-203-2881 if the applicant is at Greywolf Elementary or Sequim Middle School.

You can also find the forms at vfwwa.org and then select “Programs” and then “Youth Essays.”
