Veterans Corner: Memorial Day ceremonies

Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62 Sequim will be holding a Memorial Day ceremony with the Sequim VFW Post 4760 Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m. at Sequim View Cemetery.

From there the Legion will continue to Jamestown Cemetery for a noon ceremony, then to Dungeness Cemetery for a ceremony at 12:45 p.m. ceremony and to Blue Mountain Cemetery for an observance at 1:30 p.m.

Following the ceremony at Sequim View Cemetery, the VFW will go on to Gardiner Cemetery for a 12:30 p.m. ceremony.

Flags will be placed at Sequim View Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 24. They will be picked up at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 26. All help is appreciated.”

June 14 is Flag Day and Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62 will hold a Flag Disposal Ceremony at the Post, 107 E. Prairie St. in Sequim, at 2 p.m. All are welcome. If you have flags that are no longer in good shape, please bring them. Please fly only nice, clean, non-tattered flags. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Save the date: Veterans Appreciation Day is July 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Home Depot parking lot. There will be free food and prize drawings. The Grand Prize is a Ryobi tool kit.

This event is organized by Jack Grennan American Legion Post 62. Come out and meet your local veterans organizations! Hope to see you there!

The Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760, along with Port Hadlock Post 7498, awarded their Teacher of the Year honor to Brian MacKenzie, a history teacher at Chimacum High School. Brian has encouraged his students to participate in the annual VFW “Voice of Democracy” essay contest for a number of years.

He has also served as a principal and assistant principal in the past and was instrumental in significantly improving the reading, math, and science scores across the school. Congratulations, Brian MacKenzie!!

Save the date: Saturday, Aug. 2 is the annual All Veterans Turkey Shoot at the Peninsula Long Rifles Campground. This is put on by the Sequim American Legion. There will be prizes as well as free food and drinks. All ammo and targets will be provided. Further details will be in July’s column. Start practicing.
