The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust will award $17,600 in community grants in 2023.
Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million. It was her intent that the income from the trust be used for charitable and civic projects in Clallam County that otherwise might not happen.
The 2023 grant awards include:
• Concerned Citizens, $3,000, to purchase a van
• Healthy Families of Clallam County, $2,500, to restore and refresh Rose House Transitional Housing
• North Olympic Library System, $2,000, to help fund the Sequim Library Expansion and Renovation Project
• Olympic Peninsula Extended Needs Housing, $2,000, to support the personal needs of adults experience intellectual of developmental disabilities
• PAHS Band Boosters, $2,000, to cover the costs to transport the band,choir and orchestra students and chaperones between Port Angeles High School and SeaTac Airport
• Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, $2,000, to purchase hospice-specific nursing supplies
• Sequim Food Bank, $1,500, to be used for the Family Holiday Meal Program
• Joyce Community Education Foundation, $1,000, to purchase a digital camera and equipment
• Olympic Nature Experience, $1,000, to buy emergency supplies
• Rainforest Council for the Arts, $600, to create a fund for art supplies.
