24-hour gym set to open in Sequim this fall

Entrepreneur Magazine ranks Anytime Fitness the 13th fastest growing franchise in America

Consider yourself a morning person and like to exercise before breakfast? Not a problem.

Work nights and want to go to the gym when your shift ends at midnight? Go for it.

Working out will be easier than ever when Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour secure-access gym, opens in Sequim this fall by popular demand.

According to owners Jay and Heidi Bryan, the fast-growing franchise is expected to open this October in the Rock Plaza development, located at the

Sequim Avenue and Old Olympic Highway roundabout.

The Bryans opened an Anytime Fitness facility in Port Angeles nine months ago. Like the development of a child, the business grows stronger by the day. Now, the couple is ready to give birth to their second "baby."

"Anytime Fitness offers a convenient and affordable exercise option for people," Jay Bryan said. "We’ve been thrilled with the demand (in Port Angeles) and believe a 24-hour access club will be a great addition to the (Sequim) community."

Opening a Sequim club wasn’t part of the master plan, Heidi Bryan admitted. "However, the demand from folks in Sequim has been overwhelming," she said. "It seems a day doesn’t go by without somebody stopping by or calling to ask us to please open a facility in Sequim."

The husband and wife team will split their time between the two gyms but they are moving to Sequim and already have enrolled their two children – Cooper, 6, and Bailey, 10 – in the Sequim School District.

At Anytime Fitness, members can work out any time of the day or night using an electronic security-access key tab to enter the club, even when the office isn’t staffed. Once inside, members are granted full use of all the resistance training and cardiovascular equipment. Security cameras monitor the facility 24/7.

Anytime Fitness offers personal fitness training, 24-hour tanning, hydro-massage and access to the organization’s nearly 1,000 clubs countrywide.

Jay Bryan describes the Anytime Fitness atmosphere as convenient, comfortable and warm with high-end equipment. Every treadmill and elliptical exercise bike has its own television screen so each person can watch a different show, he said.

Sequim is more than big enough to support another workout facility, according to Jay Bryan. "People from other facilities won’t necessarily join our gym, it’s the people who are sitting at home and looking for the right opportunity that we are targeting," he said. "We are good at what we do because we aren’t trying to do everything (that other gyms offer). And, you can’t beat the hours."

"Jay and Heidi run a first-class operation," said Rock Plaza developer Joe McLaughlin Sr., in an Aug. 24 press release. "We have been watching them in Port Angeles for the past nine months and are very impressed with how they treat their customers as well as the quality and cleanliness of their facility."

"It’s easy to see that they really care about helping people of all ages," McLaughlin continued about the Bryans. "We can’t wait to get them up and running in Rock Plaza."

The Bryans moved to the peninsula with the intent of opening Anytime Fitness. The couple managed a 3,000-member club on Whidbey Island for 12 years prior. Jay Bryan has a master’s degree in human performance with an emphasis on health and aging. Heidi Bryan has 12 years experience as a personal trainer and aquatics and Pilates instructor.

Founded in 2002, Anytime Fitness has more than 700 clubs in 45 states and another 600 franchise territories have been sold. By the end of 2008, the business is expected to open its 1,100th club and the 2,000th by the end of 2009.

Entrepreneur Magazine ranked Anytime Fitness as the 13th fastest growing franchise of any type in America last February.

As an incentive for people to join the Sequim club, the Bryans are offering an enrollment fee waiver for the first 100 members who sign up prior to the grand opening.
