HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Buy a beautiful holiday poinsettia and benefit local schoolchildren! The Helen Haller Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization is sponsoring a Holiday Poinsettia sale. PTO members are now taking orders for red, white, pink, or red-flecked poinsettias. The flowers are available for purchase for $10 per plant now through Nov. 22. Poinsettias will be available for pick up at the school office on Friday, Dec. 3. Sales proceeds benefit Helen Haller Elementary School students – buy now and help local students! GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Recently the first-graders in Monique Brasher’s class completed their first writing unit. To celebrate this event, each student picked a piece of writing to publish. A few days were spent fixing and fancying up their work. On the day of the celebration, students shared a small part of their work with the whole class and read their entire piece to a small group of fellow authors. The event ended with a special snack. After the celebration, each author chose one thing that he or she learned about being a writer. The following are their important ideas:

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL
_ The Scholastic Book Fair continues in the library until Friday, Nov. 5. A percentage of the proceeds go directly into the library budget for buying books and promoting reading. Hours are 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

_ Sixth-grade teachers Meredith Johnson, Kay MacDonald, Clarke Mason, Shannon Paselk, Steve Koehler, Dave McInnes and Paul Pinza took about 200 sixth-grade students on an overnight science field trip to the Olympic Park Institute at Lake Crescent during the week of Oct. 18. The teachers, students and parent chaperones stayed for two nights in rustic cabins and hiked, conducted field studies and played lots of games. The weather was stellar! The trip was funded in part by parents and a grant from the Albert Haller Foundation, as well as donations from generous community members. The school also received a substantial discount on admission from OPI.

_ Sequim Middle School ASB challenged the student body and staff members to wear pink on Friday, Oct. 29, in a show of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. More than $600 in donations was collected and turned over to Kristi Toth of Operation Uplift, a local support group for breast cancer patients. Since the student body was able to raise the goal of $300 or more in just four days for this worthy cause, Principal Brian Jones and Assistant Principal Scott Harker allowed the students to spray paint their hair … PINK!

Sunny Farms donated pumpkins for First Teacher’s annual pumpkin painting event, which took place in the commons at the school on Friday, Oct. 29. Happy Tymer Clowns were on hand to add to the fun!
Friday, Nov. 5 – Reading with Kathy Withey at 10:30 a.m. Drop in from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 8 – Reading Time with Naomi Foley (Peaches the Clown) at 10:30 a.m. Every child attending Reading Time receives a free book. Drop in from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

First Teacher is located in classroom 4W in Sequim Community School at 220 W. Alder St., next to the playground. SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL
_ Recently Dave Luebbert drummed his way into the hearts of the members of Sequim High School’s chapter of People First. Drummer Dave spent the morning with the members, demonstrating how to drum using the "face" and "tone" sections of the drum head, using a flat hand to bounce off the face of the drum. The members drummed many different patterns, learning how to speak "loudly and softly" with the drums; how to "answer" within a particular rhythm. The members used an assortment of drums: African-type to large commercial water bottles. Drummer Dave also teaches hand drumming at the Boys & Girls Club and Snap, so check it out.
People First is a group with promotes self-advocacy for the developmentally disabled.

_ Sequim High School is celebrating its 100th year! This school year marks the first year, a century ago, that Sequim had a ninth-grade class. This is a callout to Sequim High School graduates from all years to share their high school photographs for centennial displays. Ideally we would like to work with scanned photos, but if you don’t have access to a scanner, bring your photos (with your name on them for return purposes) into the school district office and they will be scanned.
