For two seasons, the City of Sequim and Olympic Theatre Arts have offered movies in OTA through a monthly program called “At the Movies.”

But after a one year trial to see if the program could increase attendance and volunteers, the city is stopping its showings.

In the partnership, Sequim paid for movie licensing fees and OTA provided the facility, staffing and concessions. For its first 12 showings, city officials estimated it lost just over $580 and it lost $1,242.01 for its next 12 showings.

Admission was $5 per person and total sales were split equally between the city and OTA with the intent to promote the city’s Music in the Park program and Olympic Theatre Arts.

The city couldn’t mention the movie title nor could OTA pay to advertise the program due to a contract agreement with the distributor so as not to be seen as competition with other movie houses. In return, the city paid the lowest rental fee of $150 for each film.

Films ranged from classics to modern movies recently released or soon-to-be-released for home release.
