Breakfast for bots

SHS club raising funds for regional competition

The Sequim High Robotics Club is gearing up to go to the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition in Seattle, March 28-30.

To help raise some of the cost of competing — about $5,000 all told, for materials during the year-long competition — the club is hosting a fundraiser breakfast on Saturday, Feb, 23 (see box).

The $7 breakfast includes eggs, bacon, coffee and juice, will all funds going to the club.

The club has been working on a robot since February to compete in one of the largest regional competitions in the country. FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, was founded by Dean Kamen, known for inventing the Segway, heart valves and more.

Each winter a new challenge is released and teams worldwide race to build for the competition. Last year, enhanced by the ethos of "Gracious Professionalism," the event took place at Century Link Field with more than 100 teams present on the pit floor.

SHS’s Robotics Club is sponsored by Clallam County 4-H, and had start-up funding from the local JC Penney store.
