The Wolves have plenty of firepower. Now if they can only keep their goalkeeper healthy.

Sequim opened Olympic League play against North Mason Sept. 11 without their starting goalkeeper, falling to the Bulldogs 5-3.

When freshman Rachel DeWees jammed her finger during warm-ups, the Wolves used a pair of position players to fill the gap. North Mason took advantage, racing to a 4-1 lead behind three Taylor Sawyer scores.

Blaire Maloney scored in the first half to cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1 by halftime, but North Mason was too much.

The Wolves did get a push in the second half after Turi Anderson’s free kick from 20 yards out found the net, but Megan Beisley scored with four minutes left to give the Bulldogs a three-goal cushion.

"I’m so proud of (Turi); she’s becoming a real solid player," Sequim coach Enid Halewyn said."

Sequim’s Angela Richards got her first goal of the season on a put-back with two minutes left.

"I like that we saw glimpses, some moments of some beautiful passing," Halewyn said. "We need to continue to gel."

The game was at least some competition; Sequim routed Forks 14-0 two days earlier in a nonleague contest. Anna LaBeaume and Ashley Peterson each had hat tricks as 10 different Wolves scored.

"I felt bad (for Forks),"

Halewyn said.

The Wolves (0-1 in league, 1-1 overall) travel to Silverdale to take on Klahowya Sept. 18, and to Poulsbo for a Sept. 25 match-up with a strong Kingston squad before hosting the Port Townsend Redskins Sept. 25.
