A two-vehicle collision July 22 at Cays and Lotzgesell roads northwest of Sequim nearly sent an SUV into a home.

A landscaping berm prevented it from crashing into the house at 1672 Lotzgesell Road.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Ley gave this account of the collision and its aftermath:

Joseph and Mary Zich of Sequim had just left their Nelson Road home and were southbound on Cays Road in a Ford Taurus about 1:15 p.m.

A Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Laura Fog of Moorpark, Calif., was eastbound on Lotzgesell Road and failed to stop at the stop sign.

The Santa Fe entered the intersection, hit the Taurus and spun it three-fourths of a turn counterclockwise.

The Santa Fe veered 45 degrees to the right, smashed through the fence at 1672 Lotzgesell Road, went over a landscaping berm and came to rest on the lawn.

"It went through the fence and the berm stopped it," Ley said. "That was what caused the major deceleration.

The Zichs and Fog were taken to Olympic Medical Center for evaluation and released.

Fog was cited for second-degree negligent driving.
