Opportunity to Excel after-school study program is offered to students at all schools every Tuesday and Thursday until 3:45 p.m. Staffed by teachers, this is an opportunity for students to catch up or get help with schoolwork.
Buses leave from Helen Haller (Stadium Parking Lot) at 4 p.m., making selected stops. Check on the district website to view alternate bus routes. For more information about the OTE program, call your student’s school office.
Winter vacation is Dec. 20-31. Classes resume on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Giving Tree is ready for donations. Each year donations of new, unwrapped toys and nonperishable food items are collected and sent to charities to benefit local families in need.
All toys are sent to Sequim Community Aid, and food donations go to the Sequim Food Bank. Donations will be accepted until Wednesday, Dec. 15, and can be dropped off in the school office.
The Greywolf Peer Mediation program is under way! Our older students who are involved with the program possess skills in many areas including leadership and creativity. The 32 mediators have already undergone three hours of training to use their skills in solving problems on the playground.
Mrs. Shea and Mr. Smith are excited to work with these responsible students!

MIDDLE SCHOOL
The choir concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the high school auditorium. This is a combined concert featuring the middle school and high school choirs.

Friday, Dec. 17: Explore sea stars with Shirley Anderson from Feiro Marine Life Center at 10:30 a.m. The Feiro Marine Life Center, established in 1981, is an educational and scientific organization promoting marine education and conservation, and is located on the City Pier in Port Angeles.
First Teacher is closed Dec. 20-31 during the Sequim School District Winter Break.
First Teacher is located in classroom 4W in the Sequim Community School at 220 W. Alder St., next to the playground. Parents of preschoolers can come with children and enjoy activities, the playroom and the playground. HIGH SCHOOL
? Yearbooks go on sale Jan. 13-17 for $55. The next time frame that yearbooks can be sold will be May 2-13 for $60. Students will be able to pick up their yearbook on Campus Day, May 9.
? High school seniors, if you haven’t placed your order for cap and gown or other graduation items, you may do so online at nationalachiever.com or contact National Achiever at 800-800-4083. The deadline for "on-time" orders is Dec. 15. Graduation is scheduled for June 17, 2011.
? The annual Winter Wishes Assembly will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, in the Rick Kaps Gymnasium.
? There will be a combined choir concert featuring the middle school and high school choirs at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in the auditorium. The high school choir also will perform at Home Town Holidays at the Bank of America Park, located in downtown Sequim, from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18. The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event.
Choir students are raising money to travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in spring 2011. They are selling coupon cards for $20 that feature deals at 27 local merchants and can be used multiple times for one year. Contact Choir Booster president Jim Stoffer at 775-9356 for more details.
? The Band Winter Concert is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16 in the auditorium. The concert band, wind ensemble, percussion group and jazz band all perform.
Don’t miss the band car wash at Rock Plaza from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18. The band is raising money to attend the Heritage Festival in Anaheim, Calif., in the spring of 2011. Talent Show auditions are just around the corner. The auditions are open to all current high school students, their parents, and staff. So, if you can sing, play an instrument, dance, or have any talent, come and audition! Candidates for emcees are needed as well.
Auditions will be held in the auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 17, starting at 4 p.m. Show dates are March 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

Students in integrated science have been studying physical properties of matter, including techniques for separating substances from each other. We went to the wastewater treatment plant to learn about additional separation techniques and to learn how the properties of matter and separation techniques they studied in the classroom are used in the real world to prevent household wastewater from polluting Puget Sound.
Students learned from our guide, operator of the plant Al Chrisman, that there are some pollutants that are not taken out of the wastewater before it enters the sound. Now they will carry out a project to educate other students and staff about how to prevent these pollutants from getting into wastewater in the first place.

Members of the Select Choir performed at the Guy Cole Center at Carrie Blake Park on Nov. 27 for the Lavender Bazaar. Choir Boosters are now accepting donations for their upcoming rummage and plant sale.
The sale will take place Feb. 5 at the middle school cafeteria from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Those wishing to donate items for the sale should call Kayana Harrison at 681-5194 or at 460-4206.
The Choir Boosters and students are working to raise money to send the Select Choir to Carnegie Hall in New York City, where they have been invited to perform.
For great stocking stuffers, choir cookbooks with recipes by choir students and parents are available for $5.
