HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Recently, counselor Joan Trindle and some Haller parents entered the Zone Center. The Zone Center is where students learn about behavioral self-regulation. The evening started with some of the children being statues in the Zone Museum to demonstrate what each zone looks like, feels like and sounds like.

The zones represent the different emotional states we get into in response to life situations. The students also learn about the different states of alertness that take place in each zone.

After the student zone demonstration, the children went to the library with AmeriCorps members Tabetha Hein and Valerie Foster to hear stories and talk about the zones. The children were given workbooks where they could write about their zones.

Parents stayed behind in the zone center to learn more about the zones and how to help their children use this information at home.

Trindle said, “It is an invaluable skill to be able to self-regulate your emotions. The students and their parents are well on their way to developing good strategies to help them do so.

“We’d like to thank all parents who participated in the zone presentation.”

On March 10, guest speaker Kelso the Frog will discuss problem-solving skills that Haller students are learning and ways in which these skills can be implemented at home. Parents are encouraged to attend.
