Charter Review Commission is focus of June 15 LWV event

The Clallam County Charter Review Commission is holding another set of public hearings in June.

The Clallam County Charter Review Commission is holding another set of public hearings in June.

What is the county charter and why does the county have it? The Clallam County League of Women Voters aims to help explain by holding information sessions before the next two Charter Review public hearings on “Our County Charter in Context.”

The commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 15, at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St. A league-sponsored information session precedes the public hearings at 5 p.m., also at the Sequim Transit.

A similar schedule is set for June 29 in the Clallam County commissioners meeting room at the county courthouse (223 E. Fourth St.) in Port Angeles.

The Clallam County Home Rule Charter fits within a system of state, local and federal law, and holds a special place as our “local constitution.” Join attorney Lindsey Schromen-Wawrin for a presentation and discussion on what this means in regard to what is in the county charter and what should be considered when the commission considers changing it.

Schromen-Wawrin grew up in Port Angeles and now works as a constitutional law and civil rights attorney. His practice currently focuses on issues of government authority and accountability.

The League of Women Voters of Clallam County is a nonpartisan political organization whose purpose is to encourage the informed and active participation of all citizens in government.
