The work is a service to the community and the experience is invaluable to understanding the workings of local government.

That is what at least two members of the Sequim Planning Commission say about the volunteer job.

Four of the planning commissioners have terms that expire this year, forcing the city council to go though an application process to either reinstate or replace them.

The commissioners with expiring four-year terms are Barbara Richmond, Mark Ozias, Dick Foster and Larry Freedman.

The planning commission gives advice to the Sequim City Council on land use, zoning and policy matters. Its members often review proposals prior to their appearance before the city council.

Richmond succeeded member Bob Anundson after he was appointed to the Sequim City Council in February 2007.

She said she is excited to reapply for her spot, adding that it has been instrumental in her ability to learn more the city she lives in.

Ozias had similar views but is unsure if he is ready to take on another four-year term.

"I’ve learned a tremendous amount about government, Sequim and how things work on the local level," Ozias said. "I would encourage those looking for a similar experience to apply."

Chairman of the commission, Freedman also indicated he wasn’t sure if he would apply to be on the commission again.

The Gazette was unable to reach Commissioner Foster.

The commission meets at

6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month. Those interested in applying need to live either in the city of Sequim or within the boundaries of the Sequim School District. At least five members of the commission must be city residents, so two of the applicants must be from within the city.

The planning commission is not the only city board with openings for volunteers.

There are two spots on the Civil Service Commission and one on the Board of Adjustment, all of which are appointed by the city manager.

City officials indicate the selection is likely to fall on whichever city manager candidate is hired.

The Board of Adjustment determines whether variances to the city’s zoning ordinance requirements should be granted. The group does not meet regularly but only when needed to re-

view a variance request. The term for the board is three years.

The Civil Service Commission performs the duties established by state law in connection with the selection, appointment and employment of personnel at the Sequim Police Department.
