At its meeting Monday, July 9, the Sequim City Council will consider a resolution in support of the Public Safety Sales Tax Initiative, Proposition 1, which will appear on the August 9 ballot. The Council invites comments from the public at that meeting.

If approved by voters, the initiative will add a one-tenth of 1 percent sales tax on nonessential purchases in the City of Sequim. Revenue from the tax will be used to finance a new police station and Emergency Operations Center in the city

“At the meeting, the city staff will detail their final analyses of the initiative for the Council," said Pat Johansen of Citizens for Sequim Public Safety, a small community group organized in support of the proposition. 

"Attendees should come away with a better understanding of the police department’s needs and of the long-term importance of upgraded facilities to the effectiveness of the department," Johansen said. "We need to know the real costs of the building as the city moves ahead."

Sequim City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month at the Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St. Meetings begin at 6 p.m.
