City of Sequim seeks to fill vacant council seat

The City of Sequim is seeking applicants to fill a vacant seat on the city council following the resignation of councilor Dennis Smith earlier this month.

Applications are due to the city clerk no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5.

Applicants must be registered voters of the City of Sequim, have a one-year continuous period of residence in the City of Sequim at the time of appointment, and hold no other public office or employment under the city government (unless authorized specifically by state statute).

Candidates will be interviewed by city councilors during a public meeting that may be held virtually online — or in person, if permitted by Washington state public health mandates, at Sequim Civic Center.

Applicants are required to submit a letter of interest, resume and completed application form with answers to supplemental questions to the city clerk at smcmillon@sequimwa.gov or by regular mail to the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The appointee would begin serving immediately after taking an oath of office and would serve until this year’s general election results are certified; if the appointee would like to serve the remainder of Position 4 term, slated to expire Dec. 31, 2025, he or she must be elected by voters in the November general election.

The salary for the position is $250 per month.

Applications are a public record and will be distributed as part of council meeting materials. By state law, the council is required to fill a vacant position within 90 days of the vacancy, city officials said last week.
