The city of Sequim celebrated National Volunteer Appreciation Week from April 10-16 with a special dinner on April 13 in Guy Cole Convention Center at Carrie Blake Park.

The annual dinner, prepared and served by Sequim City Council members and city staff, recognizes the contribution and dedication of the citizens who serve on the city’s boards, commissions and committees.

Volunteers services include time with the Planning Commission, the Design Review Board, the Citizen’s Park Advisory Board, the Board of Adjustment, Sequim Speaks, the Centennial Committee, the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, the Civil Service Commission, the Volunteers in Police Service and the Adopt-A-Trail program.

Each volunteer received a certificate and personalized bookmark.

Officer Maris Turner sent a special thank you to the Volunteers in Police Service, which started in 1999 and continues with an average 20 volunteers.

Turner said the Sequim Police Department’s day-to-day operations rely heavily on volunteers.

“Several programs, like the Child Passenger Safety, Project Lifesaver, Vacation Home Checks and the Business Trespass Program, are truly available because of their willingness to volunteer time and effort to serve our community,” she said.

“Our VIPS also provide assistance to our patrol K-9 by training on a regular basis as K-9 quarry, two volunteers are responsible for working to document the history of the Sequim Police Department and they assist with community events and are responsible for placing the radar trailer throughout the city of Sequim. The VIPS work in our office and on our streets weekly and are always available when we call them at the last minute, and for that, we thank them.”
