The City of Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., now has an emergency/safe room available for public use.

The room is located on the south side of the building at the front entrance in the vestibule before you enter into the building lobby.

Officials say the room should be used for the following reasons:

• In the case of an emergency. In the emergency/safe room is a red phone that automatically dials 9-1-1 when the receiver is picked up. The phone should be used in the case of an emergency. The dispatcher will ask what the emergency is and send the appropriate responders.

• If the user feels he or she is in danger. There is a safe feature in the facility that should be utilized if the user feels he or she is in danger. Enter the room and close the door. Push the red button on the east wall of the room to lock the door. This triggers the building alarm. Pick up the red phone, it will dial 9-1-1. The door will remain locked until the police arrive and unlock it.

• If police services are needed after hours, but it is not an emergency. Pick up the receiver on the red phone. The phone will dial 9-1-1. The dispatcher will ask the caller if there is an emergency, if the caller says no, he or she will be asked to hold and will be put through to the police after-hours dispatch.
