Clallam deputies recover stolen excavator, make arrest

Clallam County deputies arrested a man in connection with the theft of an excavator from a job site on Kirner Road in Sequim.

Authorities arrested Jason B. Hutt and booked him into the Clallam County Jail for Felony Theft on Sept. 14.

Deputies on Aug. 20 investigated the theft of the excavator from the 900 block of Kirner Road, a machine valued at about $26,000.

Neighboring residents reported hearing engines running in the early morning hours but did not see any activity, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said in a report.

On Sept. 6, acting on a tip, deputies obtained a search warrant and found the excavator in a garage on the 800 block of Jamestown Road — about 1.3 miles from the Kirner Road job site.

Further investigation revealed that Hutt rented an excavator and trailer from a local rental company, then used the trailer to steal the other excavator, the sheriff’s office said.

Hutt stored the stolen excavator in his garage, then returned the rental excavator and trailer to the rental company, the office said.
