The North Olympic Salmon Coalition seeks volunteers to plant trees to enhance salmon habitat along Siebert Creek from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.  Feb. 21. This event marks the beginning of the Salmon Coalition’s annual series of public tree-planting events throughout the North Olympic Peninsula; last year over 6,000 trees were planted by Salmon Coalition volunteers along local streams.

The coalition is kicking off the 2015 planting season by partnering with the North Olympic Land Trust to bring volunteers to the Siebert Creek Conservation Area.

“This is a beautiful property that is protected by the North Olympic Land Trust,” said Kendra Krantz, the North Olympic Salmon Coalition’s Washington Conservation Corps Education and Outreach assistant. “This reach of the creek is used by salmon and we are planting conifers along the banks to ensure that it stays that way,” said Krantz.

The Siebert Creek Conservation Area is one of 80 properties protected by the North Olympic Land Trust, which also holds 73 conservation easements on private property and owns nine properties outright.

The Siebert Creek Conservation Area is one of four open to the public for passive recreational activities such as hiking. More information about the conservation area can be found on the Land Trust website: www.north

olympiclandtrust.org.

“Land Trust volunteers already have logged hundreds of hours on restoration activities on upland portions of this property. We are happy that NOSC is able to add to the restoration of the property with this project,” said Lorrie Mittmann, NOLT stewardship director.

Tools and gloves will be provided. The event also will include a short tour of the conservation area. Bring warm, waterproof clothes and boots, water, warm beverages and a lunch.

Access to the planting site is off Old Olympic Highway and parking is limited. To attend, RSVP Krantz at outreach@nosc.org or 360-379-8051.
