Veterans Day open house
Sequim Valley Chapel holds a Veterans Day open house for veterans and their families from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at 108 W. Alder St., Sequim.
A mini flag will be given as a token of appreciation and to acknowledge veterans’ service to their country. Call 683-5242.
Nippon project hearing set
A hearing on the adequacy of the final environmental impact statement issued for Nippon’s Biomass Cogeneration Facility Project will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, in the Port Angeles City Council Chambers, 321 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles.
Seeking help with holiday cheer
The Sequim Chamber of Commerce is looking for a few more musical groups that like to sing or play holiday music to help with the organization’s Holiday Harmony efforts.
Chamber officials are scheduling for the first three Saturdays in December to have performers in downtown Sequim.

Bring your toys
The Sequim Irrigation Festival committee is seeking donations for the “Royalty Toys for Sequim Girls & Boys” toy drive.
Boxes are to be placed in Reef Tanning, Hardy’s Market, Safeway, Hurricane Coffee and the Sequim Chamber of Commerce from Nov. 18-Dec. 15.

Teen center receives grants
“The Club,” the teen center of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, received approval in October for two grants to support its programming efforts. The Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Trust is providing $14,000 to support the club’s evening program. The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is providing $1,000 for two eight-week programs: “Girls Night Out” a health education program, and “Get Fit,” a program for teen boys.
Volkswalk planned for marina
Olympic Peninsula Explorers plans a John Wayne Marina Club Volkswalk on Saturday, Nov. 13.
The group meets between 9-9:15 a.m. at QFC Foods, 990B E. Washington St., Sequim.
The 4.35-mile/7-km or 7.45-mile/12-km walk includes country roads and the Discovery Trail. The 4.35-mile option does not go down to John Wayne Marina. Strollers and pets with leashes are allowed.
The club plans to explore the Discovery Trail extension toward the 7 Cedars. Rest rooms are on the route. Call 681-5405.
Reading for hunger
Writers from Peninsula College read from their newest works to benefit the Port Angeles and Sequim food banks at the annual “Reading for Hunger Relief” event, set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, at the Port Angeles Public Library Raymond Carver Room, 2210 S. Peabody St.
A $5 donation is requested. For $10, attendees get a chapbook containing the readings.
The event is co-sponsored with Alan Turner of Port Book and News, who provides refreshments.
Toys for Tots
The Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program started its annual toy collection.
Merchants will exhibit posters and receive new unwrapped toys in a collection box.

School tour set for Nov. 16
Sequim School District has scheduled the first of two school tours for the 2010-2011 school year for Tuesday, Nov. 16, beginning at 9 a.m.
The tour features Helen Haller Elementary and Sequim High School, which celebrates its centennial this year. (In 1911, the first ninth-grade class was added to the Sequim School District.)

Meeting for the birds
Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.
Dr. Peter Hodum, visiting assistant professor at the University of Puget Sound and co-director of the Juan Fernandez Islands Conservancy, discusses the threatened bird communities of Juan Fernandez Islands, both marine and terrestrial.

Science and Cinema
Washington State University Beach Watchers of Clallam County presents “Science and Cinema” from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in Room 160 at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Activities include sorting micro-plastic samples from Hollywood Beach and Salt Creek, to help the Port Townsend Marine Science Center learn more about the area’s plastic pollution problem. Visit www.ptmsc.org/plastics.html.
Then the group has a dessert and recipe exchange and watches “Shallow Seas,” an hourlong segment of the BBC series “Planet Earth.”
