Park road closures

Olympic National Park road crews will remove a large rock that is obstructing the ditch near Milepost 11.5 of Hurricane Ridge Road. The road will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic at points just above and below the “Double Parking” area from 8-11 a.m. today, Oct. 19.

Whiskey Bend Road, the 4.5-mile gravel road connecting Olympic Hot Springs Road to the Whiskey Bend trailhead, will close to all use on Thursday, Oct. 20, until further notice.

Humane Society hosts program

The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society hosts a community outreach program from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.  

Speakers include Chris Cornell (and therapy dogs) from Olympic Gentle Paws, Jayme Wisecup from Clallam County Emergency Management with safety information for pet owners during the winter months and staff from OPHS with an update on the shelter and recent activities.

Call the Humane Society at 457-8206. The shelter is open to the public Monday-Saturday from noon-4:30 p.m.

River Center hosts open house

The Dungeness River Audubon Center celebrates its 10th anniversary with an open house from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. Activities are: 10 a.m., bird walk and talk with Bob Boekelheide; 11 a.m., river walk with Bob Boekelheide; 1 p.m., history of the railroad bridge and center with Ken Wiersema; 2 p.m., introductory tour of the center and park with Sue Chickman; 3 p.m., education programs information with Powell Jones; reception from 4-7 p.m.; and at 5:30 p.m., recognition and highlights.  

Celebrity baggers work for United Way

United Way of Clallam County holds its annual Celebrity Bagging event in Port Angeles, Sequim, and Forks from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Local celebrities volunteer to bag groceries; United Way aprons or Live United T-shirts show their support for the annual United Way fund drive.

In Sequim, participating stores are Safeway, QFC, Sunny Farms, and Grocery Outlet. In Port Angeles, the celebrity baggers will be stationed at both Safeway stores, Albertson’s, and Swain’s General Store.

Grange hosts dinner and auction

Fairview Grange, 2123 Lake Farm Road, Port Angeles, holds a Spaghetti

Dinner and Chinese Auction on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. The Chinese Auction starts at 6:30 p.m.  

All the spaghetti, salad, bread and ice cream you want is $10. Children under 12 are free.  

All tickets purchased in advance will have a ticket for a chance to win a door prize. Auction items and desserts are appreciated for the auction. Call 461-9008 to purchase tickets or for more information.

 

Community Drum Circle meets

The Community Drum Circle gathers from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Longhouse at the south end of the Peninsula College campus.

No experience or instrument is necessary. Bring a drum or percussion instrument to share, if possible.

Embroidery Guild forms local group

A newly formed group of the Brazilian Embroidery International Guild  has its first meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 1026 W. Sixth St., Port Angeles. Anyone interested in learning Brazilian embroidery is invited. For more information, call 461-9158 or 360-808-2696.

MoveOn meeting set

Clallam County MoveOn hosts a council meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Olympic Unitarian Universalist Meeting Hall, 730  Howe Road. Potluck begins at 5:30 p.m; the general meeting is at 6 p.m.

SARC Friends meeting changed

The Friends of SARC meeting has been changed to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at SARC’s upstairs studio, at 610 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The meeting originally was scheduled for Oct. 20.

Free community dinner planned

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.

Reservations are requested and may be made by phoning the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mail to dinners@sequimtumc.org.

There will be no community dinner in November, but the meals will resume Thursday, Dec. 29, at 5 p.m.

Continuing education grants available

The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma invites applications for continuing education grants from the Helen Gariepy Grants for School Educators in Clallam County. Grants will be made available to educators working for professional improvement or development of their skills.

Road work ahead on South Sequim Avenue

The City of Sequim will begin work on South Sequim Avenue between Etta Street and Hemlock Street at 7 p.m. Thursday evening, Oct 27. That portion of South Sequim will be closed for 12 hours, reopening at 7 a.m. Friday morning.

The asphalt pavement repair work will be done by Lakeside Industries. The city advises drivers to use other routes to Highway 101 during that time.

Crossing Church hosts Friday movie night

The Crossing Church’s Sequim service now meets at 7 p.m. Friday nights at Holiday Inn Express and Convention Center, 1441 E. Washington St. To celebrate, they host a free movie “Facing the Giants” and popcorn night at

7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. Attendees have a chance at door prizes.
