Burn ban lifted

The Clallam County burn ban was lifted at midnight, Oct. 15. Urban Growth Areas, including Sequim, Carlsborg, Port Angeles, Joyce, Clallam Bay and Sekiu still are restricted from outdoor burning by Washington state law.

Contact the local fire district for burn regulations and permit requirements.

Sidewalk ramps close for upgrades

As part of an improvement project to make sidewalk ramps at the Sequim Avenue and Washington Street intersection ADA compliant, the ramps are temporarily closed. South corner ramps are closed until this evening, Oct. 17; north corner ramps will be closed from this evening, Oct. 17, until Friday afternoon, Oct. 19.

Pedestrian traffic will be re-routed accordingly. Contact Troy Saghafi in Public Works at 582-2479 with questions.

Clallam Planning Commission meets

Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today, Oct. 17, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes the six-year transportation improvement program and current use assessment applications for the first half of 2012. Call 417-2277.

SARC friends to meet Thursday

There will be a Friends of SARC meeting at SARC, 610 N. Fifth Ave., at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the hallway of the first floor. This volunteer group increases awareness of SARC and what it offers.

Dinner, auction for young cancer patient set

The Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., hosts a spaghetti feed and silent auction fundraiser at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, to support the family of Brody Neal, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. Grange hosts Pumpkin Party/Country Fair

Sequim Prairie Grange hosts its annual Pumpkin Party/Country Fair on Saturday, Oct. 20. Pumpkin carving and cookie decorating for children begin at 4 p.m.; the kitchen opens at 5 p.m. The event includes a cakewalk, a white elephant sale and face painting. Call Joy Barrett, 683-2071.

Lighthouse group to meet

The New Dungeness Light Station Association hosts its annual public meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim. Keynote speaker is Mayor Ken Hays. There will be refreshments, door prizes, a silent auction and a raffle for a week at the lighthouse.

Commissioner, state candidates to debate Sunday

The League of Women Voters and the Sequim Senior Activity Center host candidate debates from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the center, 921 E. Hammond St. Participants include candidates for state representative, Steve Tharinger and Steve Gale, and candidates for county commissioner, Mike Chapman and Maggie Roth. A meet-and-greet is at 1 p.m.

Celebrate 2011 meal marathon

Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, hosts a “Meal Marathon Celebration” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, to commemorate last year’s all-day volunteer packaging of 101,000 meals for Children of the Nations. Free meals scheduled in P.A.

The nonprofit Helping Others With Life offers free meals from 4:30-6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 230 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles. HOWL also distributes free sack lunches from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays at the same location. Sales from HOWL’s two thrift stores support the free meal programs. Join ‘Haunt and Jaunt’ walk

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and Olympic Medical Center invite everyone to a “Haunt and Jaunt” Family Friendly Wellness Walk — costumes welcome — from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Jamestown Family Health Clinic, 808 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Events also include dancing and other fitness activities, with drawings for prizes.The first 250 children receive a free lunch cooler.

2012 smoke testing complete

The City of Sequim Public Works Department has completed the sanitary sewer smoke testing program for this year.

The testing, which finds defects, breaks, leaks and faulty connections in the sewer system, resumes next summer.
