Applications accepted for grants
The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2011.
Applications may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, P.O. Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
Completed applications must be submitted by Sept. 30.
Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million.
The trustees’ goal is to encourage new civic and charitable projects annually to benefit citizens of Port Angeles and Clallam County.
Ice cream social set
Sequim Prairie Grange hosts an ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at 290 Macleay Road.
Ice cream sundaes and banana splits will be served.
Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County benefits from the profits of the requested $5 donation.
Museum makes storage plans
The Museum and Arts Center plans to improve storage for its textile collections with a $20,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The center plans to enhance storage for hundreds of uniforms, hats, quilts and other textiles in the collection.
The grant will help purchase supplies, build storage racks and pay for a museum collection consultant to hold a textile conservation workshop in Sequim to help museums and other local groups holding historical textiles.
Blood drive at Trinity United

Class of 1960 reunion
Sequim High School’s class of 1960 celebrates its 50-year reunion Friday-Sunday, July 23-25.
A no host hors d’oeuvre potluck will be served at 7 p.m. Friday, July 23.
July 24 activities include a no host cocktail hour 5-6 p.m., entertainment at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at the Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.
Choices are prime rib, chicken, prawns or salmon, or to order off the menu.
The price is approximately $20 per person.
A potluck picnic is planned at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 25.

Balance program
Registration concludes Friday, July 16, for a balance and stability program beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 20.
The Clallam County YMCA program will be offered 1-2 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays through Sept. 24 in its studio, 302 S. Francis St., Port Angeles. A second 10-week session will run Oct. 5-Dec. 10.
Sessions focuses on exercises and techniques to increase stability and decrease fall risk.
The cost is $40 per person, per session. YMCA members can participate for free.
All participants are required to attend a balance screening offered by Olympic Medical Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation to verify target levels and abilities for this class. Call 452-9244.
Healing, unity ceremony
A conscious convergence ceremony begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Hall, 73 Howe Road, off Barr Road in Agnew. An offering will be taken to cover costs.
The ceremony focuses on healing of the body, mind and spirit, healing for the planet and coming into unity. There will be a special healing offered to all affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Attendees are invited to bring drums, rattles or related instruments.

Holiday DUI arrests
Washington state troopers assigned to detachments located throughout District 8, which includes portions of the Olympic Peninsula, kept busy the Fourth of July weekend, arresting 37 drivers for DUI.
Seven of those arrests were the result of collisions, while four others were the result of cell callers reporting a driver who caught their attention as possibly being impaired. There were six DUI arrests for Clallam and Jefferson counties (Port Angeles Detachments); one from a cell caller and two from injury collisions.
Motorists observing erratic or unsafe driving should not engage the other motorist but report the incident instead using their cellular phones by dialing 9-1-1.
