on vets’ health care
The Military Officers Association of America, Olympic Peninsula Chapter, and Olympic Medical Center will host an information and question-and-answer session on health care reform tailored to the military community on the peninsula.
It will be from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Olympic Medical Center’s Linkletter Hall, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles.
All military (active, retiree and family members) and military veterans are invited.
Eric Lewis, OMC CEO, will speak on the contents of the various health care reform bills circulating in Congress, specifically as they relate to Medicare, Tricare (the military health care system for retirees and family members), and Veterans Administration health care.
Hurricane Ridge Road
reopens 24 hours a day
The 17-mile Hurricane Ridge Road is again on its regular summer schedule of round-the-clock access. The road had been closed due to rockslide activity.
Visitors are urged to use extra caution and to obey traveler advisory signs near the rockslide site approximately four miles above the Heart o’ the Hills entrance station.

Hood Canal bridge delays
Removal of a temporary concrete barrier from the Highway 104 Hood Canal bridge will cause minor nighttime delays for drivers this week.
Motorists can expect one-way, alternating traffic and delays up to 15 minutes between
8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, and 4 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, as crews remove 1,000 feet of barrier from the east and west approach spans.

Electoral College presentation
Final results of the study of the Electoral College methods of presidential elections are ready for presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
A group headed by Clint Jones of Sequim wants to challenge the constitutionality/legality of the Electoral College, the 538 persons who actually elect the president of the United States.

Festival proceeds
support cancer patients
Olympic Lavender Farm donated its 2009 Lavender Festival U-pick proceeds to benefit patients at the Thomas Family Cancer Center at Olympic Medical Center.
According to Olympic Lavender Farm owner Mary Borland, the visitors’ response was overwhelming and $1,900 was raised during the festival weekend. She designated the funds raised this year specifically to assist patients being served by the OMC Patient Navigator Program, which helps patients after a cancer diagnosis by providing support, assistance with paperwork, health insurance filing and claims, and finding resources.
Currency systems group meets
North Olympic Exchange Clallam County, a community currency systems group, meets Thursday Aug. 27 at the Lyre’s Club, 229 W. First St., Port Angeles.

The Sequim Christmas Chorus invites singers of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels to sing in its 25th anniversary season.
Music is provided and no auditions are necessary.
Rehearsals with director Gary McRoberts start at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6.

Volkswalkers ready
for Hurricane Hill
Join the Olympic Peninsula Explorers Volkssport Club on a Hurricane Hill Walk on Saturday, Aug. 29. The route follows roads and a well-maintained trail to Hurricane Hill.
This will be a 10km (6.2 mile) walk with a 5km (3.1 mile) option.
Strollers and wheelchairs are possible, and there are restrooms on the route. No pets are allowed. The elevation is over 5,000 feet, so bring water.
Meet at Albertsons, 114 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles, shortly before 9 a.m. on Aug. 29, then carpool to begin the walk.
