Shelter offers pet adoptions
On Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the PETCO in Sequim (1205 W. Washington St.), the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society offers off-site adoption of healthy puppies, kittens, dogs and cats. Potential new owners fill out an adoption agreement and pay a fee.

Humane society needs ‘kitten season’ help
The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society needs help with the following: foster homes for cats with kittens, for special needs cats, and for dogs; non-clumping cat litter, dry cat and kitten food, and dry dog food; volunteers to help the society help the animals.

Kingston-Seattle passenger ferry runs
The SoundRunner Ferry begins passenger-only ferry service between Kingston and Seattle on Tuesday, May 31. The ferry runs Monday-Friday, leaving Kingston at 6:40 a.m. and 4:20 p.m., returning from Seattle at 9:15 a.m. and 5:20 p.m. Crossing time is 45 minutes.
Purchase tickets at the kiosk 30 minutes prior to sail times or call ahead to purchase at 360-297-3016.

Buchanan speaks about Fort Casey
Terry Buchanan of Sequim will talk about the history of Fort Casey at Peninsula College’s Studium Generale program at 12:35 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in the Little Theater.
Buchanan interviewed surviving soldiers from World War I and World War II for his master’s thesis and his subsequent book, “Fort Casey.”
Peninsula Explorers set for adventure
Olympic Peninsula Explorers start a walk and a bike ride at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28, from QFC, 990B E. Washington St., Sequim.
Noon lunch and a meeting follow the walk/bike at Chinese Garden Restaurant, 271 S. Seventh Ave., Sequim.
A 4.3 miles/7 km walk includes county roads and the Discovery Trail. A 7.5 miles/12 km walk includes John Wayne Marina.
Strollers can be used, pets are allowed on leash and restrooms are available.
The 9.3 miles/15 km and 15.5 miles/25 km bike rides along the Olympic Discovery Trail include Railroad Bridge Park and Robin Hill Farm County Park.
The ride includes pavement. Helmets are required.

Shepherds’ Festival
Shepherds’ Festival 2011 will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, May 30, at Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.
The festival includes spinning demonstrations by North Olympic Shuttle & Spindle Guild, lamb kabobs and lamb chili, sheep-shearing demonstrations, arts and crafts and sheep and llamas.
Lambchops 4-H Club sponsors a petting farm. Becky Northaven presents herding dog demonstrations at noon and 2 p.m.

Identity theft protection workshop set
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans hosts a free educational workshop, “Identity Theft: What You Need to Know,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Faith Lutheran Church, 382 W. Cedar St., Sequim. The workshop is presented by Stephen Moser, a financial representative with Thrivent.

Gala, auction for Seattle Children’s
The Trey Green Guild hosts it sixth annual Wine Gala and Auction at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road in Sequim. The event includes complimentary wine and beer tastings with local vendors, appetizers, silent and live auctions, raffles, games and a speaker. All proceeds fund uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. The event is $50 per person.

Rick DeWitt of the New Dungeness Light Station speaks on its lighthouse and others in Washington at the Newcomers’ Club luncheon Tuesday, June 7.

Forestry seminar, tour offered
Northwest Certified Forestry and North Olympic Land Trust host an ecological forestry seminar and tour from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.
The seminar and tour provide information for all forest owners and managers, from families to nonprofits to consulting professionals. After a presentation, participants join practitioners to tour timber stands in the Olympic National Forest that have been thinned using a variety of innovative harvesting strategies.
